Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is basically an exfoliation and skin rejuvenation procedure that leaves skin looking softer and brighter. It is a “lunch time” procedure which it takes less than an hour, approximately only 45 minutes, to complete.

The main purpose of the treatment is to stimulate the production of new skin cells and collagen. It uses fine diamond tips to gently scrape off, then vacuum, the outer keratin layer of the skin. Less aggressive than laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion is a non-surgical treatment that does not require an anesthetic (yes – you don’t need numbing medicine!) and works on all skin types and colors.

While the effects of microdermabrasion are not as dramatic as those of laser resurfacing, recovery time after the procedure is much shorter. While there may be some redness, patients can return to work immediately after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Should I Prepare For The Procedure?

You should avoid sun exposure, tanning creams, and waxing for about a week before treatment and stop using exfoliating creams, masks & acids and retinoids approximately three days prior to treatment. If you come with your makeup on, our aesthetician will remove it and cleanse your face before the procedure begins.

Microdermabrasion is non-surgical and is minimally invasive. There’s very little you need to do in advance for it. However, it a good idea to discuss your skin concerns with our doctor and medical aesthetician to find out if microdermabrasion is the right fit for you. In order for us to properly assess your conditions, please let us know if you have done any cosmetic procedures and surgeries before, as well as other known allergies and medical conditions.

How Should I Take Care Of My Skin After The Procedure?

You are advised to use an effective moisturizing agent to minimize dry and flaky skin. Keep your skin hydrated and use gentle skin care products. You should avoid using strong acids and retinolds for at least one day after treatment. It’s extremely important to protect your skin with sunscreen as your skin will bee more sensitive to the sun in the following 2 weeks after the treatment.

What Should I Expect After The Procedure? What Are The Side Effects? How Long Does It Take To Recover?

You can expect to see some improvements immediately after the procedure. The number of microdermabrasion sessions needed will depend on the severity of your skin concerns as well as your expectations.

Common side effects of microdermabrasion include mild tenderness, swelling, and redness. These are temporary and generally go away within a few hours after in the day.

Since microdermabrasion is minimally invasive, there is little to no downtime after the procedure. You should be able to resume your daily activities immediately.
