Reversing the Signs of Sun Damage

If there’s one thing Vancouverites love, it’s the sun. The general consensus is that we all hate rainy days and rejoice in the long awaited summer season. But summer isn’t all fun and games when it comes to your skin—too much exposure can cause sun damage that can have long lasting effects. Not to worry though, you don’t have to give up your fun in the sun to prevent, or even reverse, these unwelcome effects. Just keep in mind these tips and you can enjoy your sunny days guilt-free:

Wear Sunscreen

Although most people know enough to wear sunscreen when the sun is out, practicing sun protection year-round can actually prevent further sun damage and may reverse some of the damage that has already occured. Remember to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, as this is one of the keys to healthy, youthful-looking skin.

The accumulation of the dead, outermost layer of the skin can make it appear dappled and uneven. Exfoliation dissolves these dead skin cells, leaving your skin smoother, brighter, and more radiant.

Use Products with Skin Lighteners

Get rid of brown splotches with products commonly referred to as “skin bleach” – a term that encompasses a number of products which either inhibit or slow down the production of pigment in your skin. The end effect of using these products is lightening of the brown sun spots by stopping the skin’s uneven production of melanin (brown pigment) which your skin produces in response to sun exposure.

Get your Antioxidants

Hydrate and arm yourself with antioxidants. Antioxidants will neutralize free radicals thus protecting skin’s cells from cancer while also diminishing the collagen and elastin degradation by free radicals. Collagen loss is largely responsible for formation of wrinkles and age-related degradation and sagging of skin.

Visit a professional and learn about your options, such as BBL Photorejuvenation. BBL is a noninvasive cosmetic rejuvenation procedure used to reduce or remove the unwanted effects of aging and sun exposure. It also shrinks the size of pores and the appearance of tiny, superficial blood vessels, thus improving skin tone and uniformity of color, leaving your skin looking more radiant and smooth.
