YOUR GUIDE to
NEUROMODULATOR INJECTIONS:
We’re talking about
Botox®, Xeomin® and more.

Everybody has heard the word, “Botox” from celebrity television shows, from the latest beauty article in your favorite magazine, or from social media posts. But, did you know that Botox® is not the only neuromodulator on the market?

Neuromodulators such as Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are used to reduce or even eliminate the lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes, by relaxing the muscles responsible for the development of static and dynamic lines or wrinkles.

After treatment, the muscles gradually become relaxed, allowing the overlying skin to appear smooth and unwrinkled. Alone, or in combination with other facial rejuvenation procedures, these products can offer a significant
improvement in one’s appearance. Now you may be asking: “What is the difference between the three?” Well, let us help you with that question.

What is Botox®?
Botox® is a muscle relaxing agent, derived from Botulinum, which reduces wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing the responsible muscles. The most common areas of treatment are frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet wrinkles. It gives a non–surgical
brow lift, producing a relaxed and rejuvenated appearance. Interestingly, it may also be used to treat excessive underarm sweating, migraine head- aches.

Treatment of hypertrophied (overgrown) Masseter (chewing) muscles with Botox® can also be used to make the lower face a little more narrow, improving facial shape if needed.

What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin® is the newest neuromodulator on the market and is actually very similar to Botox®. It has the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin type
A, as the older Botox® and is used in the same dosage amounts.

What makes Xeomin® different from both Botox® and Dysport® is that impurities, such as complexing proteins, have been removed from Xeomin®, leaving the active ingredients purified. Because of its purity, Xeomin® is thought to be less likely than the other 2 older brands to cause adverse effects such as allergic reactions or immunity to the product.

Xeomin® treatments produce the same beautiful outcome as Botox®, and results last just as long. Xeomin® (Zee-Oh-Min) can also be used to erase the lines between and above your brows, lift the brows, reduce Crow’s feet, and more.

What is Dysport®?
Dysport® has been recently introduced to North America, but it has been used in Europe for many years. Dysport® uses a smaller fragment of Botulinum A Toxin, and may have a greater diffusion radius when injected, producing more diffuse results. This may produce a softer effect in some areas, like crows feet, but a decreased a precision in others, like frown lines between the eyes resulting in complications such as a drooping eye lid.

Which one should I use?
Seeing a medical practitioner that has experience in injections is a must, and can guide you through the process. Remember that injection technique and the skill level of the injector is more important than the product injected!

Is there any downtime?
These injections are a lunch time procedures, and have no downtime. You could come during your lunch break, and see the difference in the upcoming days.

Does it hurt?
Like most injections, Botox® injections can feel like a slight pinch. However, speaking to Dr. Pinkhasik at Medical Spa Club, he numbs the area just before the injection with ice, making injections barely noticeable.

Do neuromodulators prevent wrinkles?
Yes, Botox®, Xeomin®, and Dysport® can prevent you from getting deep or fixed wrinkles.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?
Although the results are visible, a skillfully performed treatment will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” You will just look more relaxed, rested, and rejuvenated.

Other benefits of neuromodulators

Besides reducing wrinkles and making skin smooth, neuromodulators have other benefits. Injecting Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® can also help with the following:

1. Get the V-look. Want to slim your face and get that V-look? Well, You can slim the jaw line with a simple injection of Dysport®, Botox® or Xeomin® into Masseter Muscles on each side of the jaw. This face sliming procedure is popularly known as the non-surgical square jaw reduction procedure, or the Botox® square jaw reduction procedure.

2. Manage excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis). When you’re thinking about Botox®, Xeomin® or Dysport® remember that there are many more uses than just for wrinkles. Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® can also help those with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) for up to eight months!

3. Manage TMJ syndrome. Relief from jaw pain is another benefit of using Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®. TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder usually results from Bruxism (habitual grinding of teeth), or from excessive chewing. The joint (TMJ) becomes inflamed from overuse, which can cause headaches and pain while chewing. Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® injections into the Masseter Muscles (muscles involved in chewing) can relax the over-used muscles and offer pain relief while not interfering with the ability to chew food.

4. Manage migraines. Who would’ve thought that the same Botox® used as a beauty product could also relieve pain? It does! Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® help prevent headaches in adult patients with chronic migraines. It does so very effectively, most likely by reducing the muscle tension which causes tension headaches and triggers migraines!
